Þú komst til að kveðja í gær.
Þú kvaddir og allt varð svo hljótt.
Á glugganum frostrósin grær.
Ég gat ekkert sofið í nótt.
Hvert andvarp frá einmana sál,
hvert orð sem var myndað án hljóms
nú greindist sem gaddfreðið mál
í gervi hins lífvana blóms.
En stormurinn brýst inn í bæ
með brimgný frá klettóttri strönd,
því reiðum og rjúkandi sæ
hann réttir oft ögrandi hönd.
Því krýp ég og bæn mína bið,
þá bæn sem í hjartanu er skráð.
Ó, þyrmdu honum, gefðu honum grið.
Hver gæti mér orð þessi láð?

You came to say goodbye yesterday.
You said goodbye and everything was so quiet.
On the windows the frost rose grows.
I could not sleep last night.
Each sigh from a lonely soul,
every word that was formed without sound
now seems like a frostbitten affair
dressed in the guise of lifeless flowers.
But the storm breaks into town
with waves from the rocky coast,
the angry and fuming sea
gives often a challenging hand.
So I kneel and I say my prayer,
the prayer of the heart is recorded.
Oh, spare him, give him peace.
Who should watch over me in this land?
